LPG cylinder's prices to rise by rupees 250
  • 5 years ago
Keen for reforms in the oil and petroleum sector, the Oil Ministry wants the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) to discuss the Kirit Parikh committee's recommendations of raising LPG cylinder price by Rs 250 and kerosene prices by Rs 4 to 5 per litre.According to sources, the ministry is preparing a draft for the CCPA to discuss the pricing of LPG cylinders, diesel and kerosene. The sources said that the Oil Ministry wants CCPA to consider the recommendations of the Kirit Parikh Committee. The Oil Ministry had set up a committee headed by Kirit Parikh with the objective of bringing in reforms in this sector. The expert committee had recommended considerable slashing of subsidy on LPG cylinders, diesel and kerosene. Currently, the government provides a whopping subsidy of Rs 508 per cylinder. While the oil ministry is keen for reforms in this key economic sector, it will be difficult for the CCPA to adopt the Kirit Parikh Committee's recommendation in toto at a time when the Modi government is facing its first big test in bringing down rising prices. Any increase in the subsidised LPG cylinder or kerosene will attract massive flak which the government does not want at a time when a weak monsoon may push up prices of essential commodities even further.
