Medieval thinking over same Gotra marriages has reared its ugly head in Haryana yet again. A Mahapanchayat of 21 villages in Rewari District has issued diktats to the families of a couple married in the same gotra to either disown the two or face social boycott. The couple, Bhagirath and his wife Sunita belong to the same village and had fallen in love in college. They got married on April 24 last year, against the wishes of their families and started living in Jaipur. They also have a child from the wedlock. Following this, a meeting was called on September 21 and the diktat passed in the absence of both the families. The couple have now approached the Rajasthan High Court for police security.
