J&K: Sarpanch's killing triggers mass resignation - NewsX

Fear has gripped the valley after the killing of a village head in Kreeri area of Baramullah district. The sarpanch Muhammad Shafi Teli was shot dead by unidentified militants outside his home at Nowpara village at around 8.15pm on Sunday night. This is the second attack on a sarpanch in the last ten days last week 62-year-old sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo was gunned down by militants. What's worrying really is the change in the terror tactics by militants who seem to want to create fear and panic at the grass root levels. Panchayat members have been terrified since the mysterious posters of militants appeared in the valley asking them to resign or face consequences. Today fearing for their lives, 20 panchayat leaders have resigned. While no outfit has claimed responsibility for the deaths yet security has been beefed up in the area to restore the confidence of Panchyat members. With the recent resignations, the number of grassroot-level people's representatives who have resigned since the 2011 panchayat polls has crossed the 350 mark.
