The elections of the Athletic Federation of India, that had the CWG scam accused Lalit Bhanot at its helm, have come under the High Court scanner. The HC has directed the union sports ministry to ensure that there is no violation of the National Sports Codes during the upcoming election, scheduled for this weekend. The court has said that any violation of the sports codes could lead to the cancellation of AFI's recognition.
The court was adjudicating an application by Rahul Mehra claiming the election notification was not in accordance with the codes and that a new-elected body could not be formed since the AFI did not have the recognition for 2012. Highlighting that Suresh Kalmadi is the lifetime president of the AFI and his aide Lalit Bhanot is the secretary, Mehra said that he had credible information that Bhanot's wife will be running.. In June last year, while at the Tihar jail lock-up, Bhanot was re-elected as secretary in the absence of any opposition.
