India News : Asaram faces heavy penalty for land encroachment in Gujarat

India News : Surat:The Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government has slapped Rs 18-crore fine on self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who was arrested by Jodhpur Police on Sunday in a minor's sexual assault case, over an alleged land encroachment case.
The state government accused Asaram of encroaching 34,000 sq metre land reserved for a water harvesting project and setting up Jahangirpura Ashram in Surat.
Asaram was fined for not paying rent to the Gujarat government for the period between 1996 and 2010.
