The popular uprising against President Bashar al-Asaad and his Baathist regime is now into its 6th month. The response has been hard, and the poorer sections of Syria's Sunni Muslim majority have been at the receiving end. Aleppo and Damascus, Syria's two biggest cities have been largely calm, with little or no support for the protestors.
