It is the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, Bihu and Pongal today. The festival commemorates the 'Uttarayan' or the beginning of the northward journey of the Sun, besides the harvest season.
Lakhs of devotees took holy dip in rivers and ponds to celebrate the festival. Devotes in North India braved cold weather conditions and lined up before various temples to offer prayers.
