CSD Canteens on an Indefinite strike

Civilian employees of unit run canteens have been on an indefinite strike since the beginning of the month demanding that they be given the status of Government employees with matching pay and perks in accordance with 6th Pay Commission. But the Supreme Court has already rejected this stand back in 2009 ruling that unit run canteens are privately run ventures and that their employees can by no stretch of imagination be treated as employees of the Canteen Stores Department. Earlier, the CAG had recommended that Unit Run Canteens should be recognised as retail outlets integral to CSDs an argument which is now being taken up by Unit Run Canteen employees.
