Immigration Minister on latest statistics; Channel crossings
  • 5 years ago
The Minister for Immigration says the government is "working hard to attract the right skills to the UK", citing the numbers of doctors and nurses who have entered the UK through the Tier 2 visa system. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show that net migration from non-EU countries is at its highest for 15 years whilst net migration from EU countries has continued to fall. Caroline Nokes also responded to doubts about the effectiveness of the French authorities in preventing illegal immigrants from making the dangerous journey across the Channel to England. Nine individuals were rescued by the UK Border Agency on Wednesday morning. Ms Nokes said that some migrants had been refusing assistance from the French, and that some of those who have arrived on British shores have been returned to France. Report by Jonesia.
