Pushing AI limits in motorsport

Teams from the Technical University of Munich and the University of Pisa arrived in Berlin earlier this year ready to do battle. Held during the German round of the 2018 Formula E championship, Roborace’s Human + Machine challenge saw the two university teams compete for the fastest lap time around the custom circuit in identical autonomous DevBot race cars.

The teams were paired to human drivers consisting of Nick Andrew, aka AR12Gaming, and Errolson Hugh, designer and co-founder of the technical apparel brand, Acronym. The former was paired to the University of Pisa and the latter with the Technical University of Munich.

This video shows on-board footage of each team’s fastest laps, side-by-side for comparison.
