NASA Declares Mars Rover Dead It explored the red planet for almost 15 years, but the rover known as Opportunity is no more. In June 2018, the vehicle was blanketed by a dust storm,
leaving its solar panels useless. Despite thousands of efforts to contact it, the rover was declared dead 8 months later. John Callas, Mars Exploration Project Manager, NASA Designed to only last 90 days, it far surpassed expectations. It roamed 28 miles in its lifetime and lived longer then any other space rover in history. Its biggest achievement? Discovering that Mars was once capable of sustaining life. "Rest well, rover. Your mission is complete."
