"When they left, we were dead in the water," Richard Nowatzki, one of the survivors of that attack, told CBS News. "They used armor piercing bombs, now when they come down, you hear 'em going through the decks...plink, plink, plink, plink...and then when they explode the whole ship shakes." 111 members of the almost 2,200-person crew went down with the ship. The wreckage was discovered roughly 17,500 feet below the surface in late January by Paul G. Allen's Research Vessel Petrel.
