1 Akrura is admired as a saintly follower of Lord Krishna. He was descendant of the Vrishni clan.
2 As per the Puranas, he was one of twelve sons born to Shvaphalka and Gandini and brother of Vasudeva which made Akrura one of Krishna’s uncles.
3 Akrura married the daughter of Ahuka - Sutanu and had two sons - Devaka and Upadevaka.
4 He was the minister of King Kansa and during the Mahabharata, he was acclaimed as the commander of the Yadava army.
5 He accompanied Lord Krishna at various social events and assisted him during different occasions. Thus, his life-stories are depicted in the various ancient texts, mainly the Bhagavata Purana.
6 One such mythological story describes that Akrura longed to meet Lord Krishna for years. Kansa (for his own evil intentions) asked him to bring Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama for a celebration.
7 On reaching Vrindavan, Akrura saw Lord Krishna's footsteps on the sand. He was so overwhelmed that he fell on his knees and worshiped the footsteps.
8 On his way to the festival, Akrura had experienced a mystic vision of Lord Krishna as Lord Mahavishnu and Lord Balarama as Shesha Naga in a bathing Kunda or Ghat.
9 This ghat still exists in Vrindavan and is referred to as Akrura Ghat. The Gopi Nath temple near this ghat is dedicated to Lord Krishna, Lord Balarama and Akrura.
