The legend of Bhishma’s birth takes one back to the ashram of Rishi Vashishtha. Once the Ashtavasu visited the Rishi along with their wives. They saw Kamadhenu and wanted to take her with them.

A Vasu called Prabhas planned to rob the divine cow with the assistance of other Vasus. Rishi Vashishtha cursed them to take birth on Earth as humans, but Prabhas being the mainstay was cursed to live longer than his companions.

Due to Lord Shantanu’s vow to Goddess Ganga, he never asked about anything and she kept drowning her infants (who were actually Astavasu), until the eighth child.

Prabhas took birth as the eighth child of King Shantanu and Goddess Ganga. He was none other than Devavrata, the one who was beloved by the pious.

After his birth, Ganga took him to different realms to be brought up and trained by pious sages including Brihaspati, Shukracharya, Vashishtha, Sanatkumara, Markandeya, Parashurama, Indra and at last the Trideva (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva).

Meanwhile, King Shantanu was filled with grief for losing his wife and son, and so he practised Brahmacharya, as well determined to virtuously rule his kingdom.

Later, the Goddess once again appeared before the king with their brilliant son who was blessed with wish-long life. She asked him to take him back.

Upon returning back to the capital (Hastinapur), Shantanu crowned Devavrata as the apparent heir.

Four years after this event, King Shantanu met Satyavati (the adopted daughter of the fisherman) on the backs of Yamuna and desired to have her as his wife.

However, her doubtful father agreed to give his blessings on a condition that Satyavati's son would inherit the throne of Hastinapura.

For the sake of his father, Devavrata sought out the father and sacrificed his 'crown-prince' title and renounce all his claims.

The fisherman was still not satisfied and implied that Devavrata's children would still claim the throne. This is when he took the “Bhishama Pratigya” that is the pledge of lifelong celibacy and from then he was called Bhishma.
