Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was a devoted Shakta follower who constantly tried to discover ways to pacify the Mother Goddess. Such was the devotion of this ascetic Sannyasi that he tried to kill himself while seeking Goddess Kali’s vision and lost his conscience when she actually appeared. 1 Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was an intense devotee of Goddess Maha Kali, who got popular as an enlightened Sannyasi during the 19th-century.
2 His birth name was Gadadhar Chattopadhyay and he was born in a poor Brahmin family in Calcutta.
3 He had experienced spiritual ecstasies and Nirvikalpa Samadhi (the highest state in spiritual realization) at a very young age.
4 As time passed by, Ramakrishna often grew restless and practiced endless meditation seeking a vision of Goddess Kali.
5 During the span of his life, he met an influential guru called Totapuri who trained him in Advaita Vedanta and other Yogic/ Tantric techniques.
6 After that, Maha Kali is believed to have often appeared before him and that’s when he went into a state of raptures while having her visions.
7 Legend has it that, she used to visit Ramakrishna whenever he called and she even ate food from his own hands.
8 Ramakrishna continued his Sadhana life long and after his marriage to Sarada Devi, he would worship her as the human form of the Mother Goddess.
9 He was admired by many elite scholars including Swami Vivekananda, who worshiped him as a Master.
