New Jersey Now Offers Gender-Neutral Option
on Birth Certificates Birth certificates in the Garden State will now offer three gender options: female, male or undesignated/nonbinary. The Babs Siperstein Law is named after Barbra Siperstein, the first transgender woman to become a member of the Democratic National Committee. Governor Phil Murphy signed this new legislation back in July, along with three other bills that
provided critical protection to New Jersey's LGBTQ community. This law has been passed
in the hopes of protecting
young trans and non-binary
individuals from discrimination. Amanda Babine, director of policy and programs at the New York Transgender Advocacy Group, speaks on the importance of this new law. Amanda Babine, via NBC New Jersey residents were previously only able to amend their gender on birth certificates after undergoing sex reassignment surgery. They’ll be the fifth state to include this option, joining New York, California, Oregon and Washington.
