President Trump on Friday cited people with "prayer rugs" coming across the US-Mexico border as support for his wall. "Border rancher: 'We've found prayer rugs out here. It's unreal.' Washington Examiner. People coming across the Southern Border from many countries, some of which would be a big surprise," Trump said in a tweet.
Trump has, in the past, suggested that "suspected terrorists" from various nations, including Muslim-dominated countries, are entering the U.S. through Mexico. While those claims are largely unsupported by data, they have been used to bolster the argument for the necessity of a physical barrier along the US southern border and, more recently, as justification for shutting down parts of the government. The partial shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history and has left hundreds of thousands of government workers without pay. At issue for Trump is $5.7 billion in funding for the wall along the US-Mexico border.
"Democrats in the newly-elected 116th Congress sworn in this month have refused to meet the president's demands while Trump has threatened to keep the government closed for months or even 'years' to secure the border wall money," notes The Hill.
