According to Business Insider, 46,000 IRS employees have been called back to work without pay amid the longest government shutdown in history. The IRS had previously announced that it would start accepting tax returns on January for the 2019 tax filing season. Since the government shutdown began, furloughed workers for the Treasury Department have lost a total of $410 million — or about $5,000 per worker.
