NYT's Maggie Haberman: Kushner Is The 'De Facto' White House Chief Of Staff

Maggie Haberman of the New York Times on Tuesday suggested that Jared Kushner is the "de facto chief of staff."

Maggie Haberman of the New York Times on Tuesday suggested that President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, is the "de facto" White House chief of staff. "Recurring theme from sources over last two days: Kushner is the de facto chief of staff, whether people realize it or not," she tweeted. Kushner was said to be under consideration to officially assume that position upon the departure of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, but Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney was named as the "acting" holder of the post. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was also among those short-listed for the position, but he dropped out of the running, notes the New York Times. Based on Haberman's report and recently published excerpts from Christie's upcoming book, 'Let Me Finish,' working alongside Kushner likely would have been rather awkward.  According to the Guardian, "Christie blames [Kushner] for his ignominious dismissal [from Trump's White House transition team] shortly after Trump's election victory in November 2016," calling the move a "hit job."  He is also said to assert that Kushner did so as retaliation for the prosecution of his father, a real estate developer, roughly a decade prior.
