Teen crashes her car while trying out the 'Bird Box Challenge'

LAYTON, UTAH — A Utah teen took an internet meme way too far and may face charges after she crashed into another car while driving blindfolded, local CBS affiliate KUTV reports.
The 17-year-old was driving with a 16-year-old passenger when the two dinguses decided to try out the "Bird Box challenge," KUTV reports.
The social media challenge is based on the popular Netflix horror film Bird Box, in which Sandra Bullock must wear a blindfold to avoid seeing a scary monster.
It has become an internet meme as people film themselves while attempting to perform various tasks blindfolded.
In this case, the 17-year-old apparently decided to use her beanie to cover her eyes as she drove her pickup truck in Layton, Utah.
She overcorrected and careened into oncoming traffic, hitting another car before skidding into a light pole and finally hitting a sound wall, KUTV reports.
In a Twitter post, Layton police shared photos of the totaled vehicles, writing: "Bird Box Challenge while driving ... predictable result."
"This happened on Monday as a result of the driver covering her eyes while driving on Layton Parkway. Luckily no injuries."
Netflix also posted a message on Twitter, which read: "Can't believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE."
"We don't know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes."
The teen could be charged with reckless driving, KUTV reports.
Speaking to KSL TV, Layton police Lieutenant Travis Lyman said: "Honestly, I'm almost embarrassed to have to say, 'Don't drive with your eyes covered,' but you know apparently we do have to say that."
"The stakes are just so high and it's just such a potentially dangerous thing as it is: to try and do it in that way is inexcusable. It really puts everybody at risk."
