Tracy's Rescue Mission to Save Dogs in South Texas Shelters (A Dog's Journey Home)

In this series, A Dog's Journey Home, we'll meet the incomparable Tracy Whyatt who in 2011, decided to follow a passion of hers and help alleviate a huge problem. A lifelong dog lover, Tracy was horrified to discover that San Antonio had holding tanks for dogs to be euthanized. She took matters into her own hands and now Tracy and her husband Scott have committed themselves to these abandoned dogs by rehabilitating them and hand delivering them to their forever families. That’s how their non-profit, TracysDogs, was born.

In this episode, we will see for the first time, exactly what it is like at these Brownsville Texas Animal Shelters, over-run with too many dogs, many injured and unhealthy... and without homes.. and facing sure euthanization.

We will follow Tracy and Veterinarian Dr. Lori Curd through the painful process of choosing which dogs she will take back to her Rescue to rehabilitate for adoption...and which dogs...knowing that most she does not take, will be put down... she must leave behind. On this trip, she will pick 30-40 dogs to bring back to her rescue.

It's an emotional struggle for Tracy during these shelter visits. “I have to take in what people want to adopt. It’s a very hard day for me because if it were up to me, every single dog you see in this shelter would be in the back of my of my van whether it was a Pit Bull, a Chihuahua, a German Shepherd, a Shar-Pei... I love all of them.”

It’s a constant battle between her head (which dogs she can get adopted).... and her heart!

But at the end of Tracy’s day, there is joy in what she does. “When I pick that dog up from that kennel and put him in the back of that van, I know that that dog is headed for a better life, a happy life, a life they probably would not have if we didn’t come down here and do this work.”
