President Xi Jinping said China reserves the right to use force to bring Taiwan under its control. According to Reuters, China hopes to achieve peaceful “reunification” with the self-ruled island. Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party became president in 2016. Since then Xi has put pressure on the democratic island. Tsai is rejecting Xi’s pressure and urgin China to embrace democracy like Taiwan has fought to do.
