Bangladesh leader Hasina wins a new term
Bangladesh’s longest-serving prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, has won her third consecutive term with a landslide win in the country’s 11th general elections, December 30. The opposition alliance led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party claims the elections were rigged and has called for a new poll.
At least 17 people were killed on election day. Ahead of the poll, dozens of opposition candidates were disqualified and some voters were reportedly barred from casting their votes. The Bangladesh economy has significantly grown during Hasina’s nine years in office so far, but she has also been accused of suppressing freedom of speech.
