Now, Acting Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan will take the reins.
He'll oversee America's largest and most complex agency with no military or foreign policy experience.
CNN reports Shanahan will be responsible for withdrawing US troops from Syria, and possibly Afghanistan.
For 17 months, Shanahan was Mattis' No. 2 in the Pentagon.
But Shanahan almost exclusively handled internal reform and budget issues.
