A 552-carat diamond was recently discovered in Canada.

A recently mined 552-carat yellow diamond is the largest ever found in North America, reports CNN. It was unearthed in Canada's Diavik Diamond Mine, which is located roughly 135 miles from the Arctic Circle, notes the Washington Post. That same mine produced the previous North American titleholder, which weighed in at 187.7 carats and was turned into a pair of pear-shaped earrings that recently sold for $1.3 million.  The latest massive diamond discovery was made in October.  According to Dominion Diamond Mines, which owns 40% of Diavik Diamond Mine: "The astonishing gemstone was uncovered while passing through the initial screening process…Abrasion markings on the stone's surface attest to the difficult journey it underwent during recovery, and the fact that it remains intact is remarkable."  It will be cut and polished prior to its sale and has yet to be given an estimated value.
