Asian longhorned tick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is known to carry a variety of pathogens. CDC, via statement They add the tick has hurt livestock in New Zealand and Australia, reducing production in
dairy cattle by 25%. New Jersey was the first state to report an
Asian longhorned tick, first in 2013
and more recently in August 2017. Since then, eight other states
have reported finding it. Asian longhorned ticks are unusual due to a female being able to reproduce up to 2,000 eggs
without mating. Health officials do not know if the tick is capable of transmitting Lyme disease. The tick has spread other serious diseases in Asia, such as SFTS virus and a pathogen that causes Japanese spotted fever.
