The Delaware Humane Association made the announcement on its Facebook page Saturday: "The Bidens have gotten to know Major while fostering him and are now ready to make the adoption official."
Several online photos show Biden with the large black-and-white dog.
The former vice president has had an extensive history with dogs.
"We've always had two dogs," he said in 2008. "We've always had two big dogs so they can have companionship. I've had German shepherds from the time I was a kid. I've trained them and shown them."
