Common said to be a good leader, you have to be a good listener.
“One thing I’m learning is that the great leaders are listeners too,” he explained. “That allows whatever group you represent, as a leader, that allows them to be heard so then you actually really are representing the people because you have absorbed and took in what they are saying and you can let it be known to the masses.”
Common plays Rear Admiral John Fisk in the new movie, “Hunter Killer,” which also stars Gerard Butler.
“I would describe [my character] as a hero that looks at the big picture and really is courageous, brave, and risk-taker,” he explained. “And he’s also a leader in that way that he really knows how to listen.”
When asked where his own bravery comes from, the rapper and activist said seeing the injustice that exists in the country and wanting to correct it.
“It’s work at times because sometimes you have things you want to say to people and sometimes you have people talking and you and already have your thought and you’re like ‘I’m not even taking in what they’re saying...’” he stated. “But I think listening is a compassionate skill, you’re taking time to show that other person that they’re valued and that you care.”
