The joint inspection team on the shared use of the estuary of the Hangang and Imjingang rivers kicked off its work at around three p.m. on Monday.
The joint use of the river estuary is part of the inter-Korean military agreement reached in September,... in which the two Koreas agreed to conduct the inspection.
"The joint inspection on the shared use of the estuary of the Hangang and Imjingang rivers is the first measure taken in 65 years involving the estuary, since the signing of the 1953 armistice agreement.
Once the inspection is complete,... navigation information will be provided for the free passage of civilian vessels."
The 1953 armistice agreement itself permits a free passage of civilian vessels in the area,... where the Hangang River and the Imjingang River converge.
However,... civilian access to the 70-kilometer long zone along the western border of the two Koreas had been restricted,... as the absence of a military demarcation line in the estuary could have led to accidental clashes between the two sides.
According to Seoul's defense ministry, the joint inspection team is made up of 10 people from each side,... including military and maritime officials, and civil waterway experts,... and the team is deploying six vessels for the inspection.
The ministry plans to complete the field survey of the joint utilization zone by the end of this year.
Once that's done,... nautical charts of the zone will be made available so private vessels can use the estuary.
