Twenty-seven people were arrested in Stellenbosch, South Africa, Monday after illegal youth protests turned violent.

The footage shows protesters throwing garbage, allegedly in front of a municipal building.

"Action was taken to disperse the crowd. Protesters damaged windows of the shops in the shopping centres in the area," police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana told South Africa's News 24.

Police responded to the chaos with rubber bullets and flash bangs, according to the filmer. "The crowd has now calmed down but tension is still high," the filmer added.
