कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी को करवा चौथ का त्योहार मनाया जाता है। ये तिथि इस बार 27 अक्टूबर को है। करवा शब्द का अर्थ मिट्टी का बर्तन होता है। चौथ का शाब्दिक अर्थ चतुर्थी है। इस दिन विवाहित महिलाएं पति की लंबी उम्र और सफलता की मनोकामना पूरी होने के लिए व्रत रखती हैं। वहीं, अविवाहित युवतियां सुयोग्य वर की कामना के लिए इस व्रत को धारण करती हैं। यूं तो करवा चौथ की कई कथाएं प्रचलित हैं लेकिन ऐसी मान्यता है कि ये परंपरा देवताओं के समय से चली आ रही है।
