Nestled in a peaceful corner of the Cathedral Paddock at FoS was a selection of red Alfa Romeos, brought all the way to Goodwood House from the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese, Milan.

Most of the people who’d been sent to look after them spoke little English, if any. It didn’t matter. Whenever they were asked something they didn’t understand by an onlooker they shrugged apologetically, looked at the car, and smiled the kind of smile that said ‘yes, lovely, isn’t it?’ And they were right. There is just something so very special about historic Alfa Romeos which transcends motoring tastes and goes beyond what the car achieved, the innovation in its construction, and even who drove it in period.

We managed to grab a few minutes with Stefano Agazzi, head of the Museo Storico, who talked us through the modest selection of cars temporarily removed from the museum for our delectation at FoS. So grab yourself a cup of tea and a digestive (or a caffe ristretto and a biscotti if you prefer?) and join us for a close look and a brief run-down of these special ‘works’ cars.
