China to Launch World's
First 'Artificial Moon' China's space industry is planning
to put an artificial moon into orbit
over the city of Chengdu by 2020. The moon has a planned orbit
of 310 miles above the earth. Acting as a nightlight, the
artificial moon would shine
eight time brighter
the earth's natural moon. A special coating
on the artificial moon It's estimated to save
the city $174 million dollars
a year in electricity costs. The moon could also be
used to illuminate disaster
areas during blackouts. If the artificial moon is
successful, three more
are planned for launch in 2022.
