Islamic school welcomes transgender people

An Islamic boarding school in Bantul, Indonesia is known amongst the trans community to be a safe haven for transgender people, or “waria” – a word blending the Indonesian words for “woman” and “man”. In 2016 the school was raided by a group of vigilante Islamists, but people are now slowly returning to pray and study.
