S. Korea asks IMF, World Bank to help with N. Korea's development
  • 5 years ago
The South Korean government has asked the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank for their involvement in North Korea's future economic development.
The Minister of Economy and Finance, Kim Dong-yeon, met on Saturday with the head of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, during the G20 meeting in Bali... and emphasized the progress made on the North Korea nuclear issue.
He cited the inter-Korean summits held this year,... the easing of military tensions on the Korean peninsula... and the improvement in North Korea's relations with the U.S.
It's widely believed that North Korea have to become a member of the IMF to readily receive international aid.
Kim also asked the President of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, to play the vital role of providing developmental assistance when the time is right -- that is, when the sanctions on North Korea start to be lifted.
