Erfurt is on the road to Santiago (German: Jakobsweg). In the Middle Ages, approximately seven monasteries were established in the city. Martin Luther, the instigator of the Protestant Reformation, lived in the Monastery of San Agustín from 1505 to 1511. The famous philosopher and theologian Maestro Eckhart lived in the Dominican monastery from 1275 to 1311.1
