House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that obtaining President Trump’s tax returns will be among the first orders of business if Democrats take back the House in the upcoming midterm elections.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that obtaining President Trump's tax returns will be among the first orders of business if Democrats take back the House in the upcoming midterm elections.  She recently told the San Francisco Chronicle that getting the tax documents "is one of the first things we'd do — that's the easiest thing in the world. That's nothing."  The Chronicle reports that Pelosi's confidence comes from "a 1924 provision of the Internal Revenue Code," that "gives certain congressional committees the right to request — and release — the tax records of even the president."  The media outlet also notes that "it's unlikely Trump would surrender those documents without an all-out legal battle." While many have long wanted Trump's tax returns to be made public, as has been a standard practice among presidents for decades, a recent New York Times report has heightened that interest.  The Times reported: "President Trump participated in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the fortune he received from his parents."
"Mr. Trump received the equivalent today of at least $413 million from his father's real estate empire, starting when he was a toddler and continuing to this day," the publication further noted. "Much of this money came to Mr. Trump because he helped his parents dodge taxes."
