Blue Spotted Coral Trout (Plectropomus laevis)
Lives in tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Those living in deep water are usually bright red while those in shallow water a dark brown with blue spots. They are popular fish to eat however often carry the ciguatera fish poison. Starts life as a female sexually maturing at about two years old and later changes to a male permanently between three and seven years old and live for twenty years. They breed as females at least once before becoming males. They tend to live as solitary individuals but aggregate to spawn during a 30-40-minute period at dusk on the new moon. Newly hatched coral trout have an egg sac which nourishes them for a few days until they are large enough to feed on micro-plankton. Coral Trouts are piscivores that eat other fish, prawns, squid and even juveniles of their own species!
