The History of Hispanic and Latinx Superheroes
  • 6 years ago
Hispanic superheroes have faced a hard-fought battle for representation dating back to the birth of comics. Latinx heroes have been in existence long before the birth of the genre, but when it comes to finding a mainstream latino superhero or latina superhero, we had to wait until the 1970s for White Tiger.

From El Santo, who gave birth to superheroes Mexicanos, to the modern age of Marvel hispanic superheroes and DC hispanic superheroes, these heroes of color have been blazing the trail for their modern predecessors. From Jaime Reyes, to Mile Morales, star of “Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse,” to Ghost Rider Robbie Reyes, Cisco Ramon Vibe, and, of course, the incomparable Avengers America Chavez. Comic books still have a long way to go to catch up on diversity and representation, but until we get there, we can still admire the pioneers who paved the path for Hispanic and Latinx superheroes.
