Liu Hongyang, Ambassador of the Middle Kingdom to Timor-Leste

Dya is definitely one of the top restaurants in Dili, as good as any best restaurant anywhere in the world, serving fabulous South Asia dishes as well as first class Italian menu.

Usually we have work lunch at the residence of the Ambassador who has an exceptional chef from Beijing. But today we went to Dya which is next to Discovery Inn, also an impeccable small local hotel.
Both businesses are owned by the Sakib Awan family, a truly wonderful family, totally devoted to TIMOR-Leste.

Amb. Liu Hongyang belongs to the new generation of Chinese diplomats who speak flawless English, and are at ease in any setting, formal or informal, very informed and cultured. He has distinguished career behind him having served both at HQs in Beijing and in important diplomatic missions - the United Nations in NY, Embassy of China in Germany, Singapore, Indonesia, Ethiopia, etc.

Ambassador Liu Hongyang graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University and China Foreign Affairs University with Bachelor Degree of Literature and Bachelor Degree of Laws. He is married with a diplomat who is posted in Germany, and both have a daughter.

We enjoyed talking about the article published in a Japanese financial paper on presumed growing Chinese influence in TIMOR-Leste. Ambassador Liu Hongyang had read my response on this page and seemed to have enjoyed it.

I told the Ambassador that I am in fact worried about growing Chinese influence to our South as China is literally buying off Australia, latest acquisition being the strategic Darwin port, a 99 year lease.

After lunch I offered the Ambassador a lift back to his Embassy in my buggy. To my surprise Amb Liu Hongyang readily accepted, something rather unusual as Chinese officials are known to be too formal and uptight.
