The Genesis of CC Sabathia

CC Sabathia has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for nearly 20 years. But it’s his reputation as a teammate, his courage in the face of personal demons, and his dedication to charity off the field that truly defines his legacy.

Carsten Charles Sabathia, Jr. was born on July 21, 1980 in Vallejo, California. Growing up, he was a dedicated two-sport athlete in both baseball and football. But after he was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the MLB draft, a young Sabathia decided to forego college, and pursue professional baseball full time. CC made his major league debut during the 2001 season. At just 20 years old, he was an instant success.

After a brief, half-season stint with the Milwaukee Brewers, Sabathia signed a massive seven-year, $161 million dollar deal with the New York Yankees. His first season in pinstripes was an unforgettable one, as the Yankees went on to win their first World Series since the year 2000. Sabathia was the number one ace on the team’s pitching staff, posting a 19-8 record and a 3.37 ERA. And he helped lead the Yankees to playoff appearances in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as well. Sabathia’s reputation as a teammate and leader in the Yankee clubhouse is also second to none, as many of his teammates will testify.

In addition to his Hall of Fame career, Sabathia also founded the PitCCh In Foundation in 2008. The organization is committed to ‘“enriching the lives of inner city youth by raising their self-esteem through educational and athletic activities.” One of the foundation’s most noteworthy causes is the annual backpack drive, which provides bookbags full of school supplies to low-income students in both the New York City and Vallejo, California areas.
