Firefighters rescued a girl from a 25-feet borewell in southern India on Sunday (September 23).

Three firefighters responded quickly and managed to rescue the girl within two hours.

The incident occurred at a village in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India, on September 23.

K Sivadarshini, 2, was playing in front of her house when she slipped into a newly dug borewell.

Eyewitnesses said the mouth of the borewell had been covered with a stone slab, which gave in when the little girl stepped on it.

Her parents heard her cries and shouted for help, prompting a neighbour to call the fire and rescue department.

A team of 20 firefighters rushed to the village and launched the rescue operation.

They found that the girl was stuck at a depth of 15 feet and tried to pull her out using a rope.

When that failed to work, they dug a pit next to the borewell and reached the girl by making a passage to link the borewell to the pit.

As an anxious crowd watched the firefighters worked furiously and brought the girl out.

Nagapattinam District Fire Officer- in-charge K Sathiyakeerthi said: “We had organised oxygen supply to ensure that the girl’s condition was stable. The entire rescue [was] over within two hours.”

The girl was in shock but had no injuries. She was taken to the Nagapattinam Government Hospital where the doctors are treating her.

“Officials should ensure that all borewells are closed properly so that no child is made to go through this again,” said Muthu Kumar, a resident of a nearby village.
