Beijing residents hope for an end to the trade war after both the US and China announced new tariffs. US President Donald Trump slapped tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese goods on September 17 and Beijing retaliated with an additional 5 per cent duty on 1,600 US products including small aircraft and textiles, plus an additional 10 per cent tariff on 3,500 items such as wheat, meat and wine. Both sets of tariffs come into force on September 24.
