Obama Again Reminds People That He Started The Economic Recovery Trump Takes Credit For

Former President Barack Obama on Thursday again reminded people that he played an important part in creating the strong economy President Trump so often claims as his own. While in Ohio campaigning for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Richard Cordray, Obama commented: "When you hear these folks bragging about this 'economic miracle,' just remember when it started."  He also noted, "the actions we took during the economic crisis returned the economy to healthy growth," and, "initiated the longest streak of job creation on record."
Obama had a similar remark during a speech at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign last week. Where the bulk of the credit should go has generally been a point of contention between the former and current leaders, but as the New York Times notes, the battle for bragging rights seems to have intensified now that midterm elections are nearly upon us. "Plagued by scandal, investigations, dysfunction in the West Wing and stalemate on Capitol Hill, Mr. Trump is making the surge of new jobs and business activity his most powerful argument for keeping Congress in Republican hands," the Times' piece notes.   Meanwhile, "Central to Mr. Obama's historical legacy is the economy's recovery after its plummet to the brink of a new Great Depression."  According to an economy-claims fact check by NPR, both presidents have contributed to the current state.  The outlet notes that Trump has certainly achieved "yardsticks that indicate a meaningful turnaround on [his] watch — including small business sentiment, business investment and goods-producing job growth," but notes that "the overall job market and wages show the economy continues to follow the steady, upward glide path that began under Obama."
