Iconic Beetle After close to 70
years of production, It was also announced that two
final edition models will be released. Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, via Al Jazeera The Beetle was born
in 1938 at the request
of Adolf Hitler, The car came to the U.S. in 1949 and
became the choice of hippies in the '60s. U.S. sales of the vehicle stopped
in 1979 but new models were
revived and introduced in 1998. The 1998 resurgence
appealed mostly to female buyers. The company revamped
its 2012 model to appeal
more to men but sales
soon tapered off. Last year, only 15,166 Beetle's were
