Silence Turns to Cheers in Barcelona 'Sound Wave' for Independence

More than one million people marched in Barcelona and other parts of Catalonia calling for independence on Tuesday, September 11, according to agency reports.In this video, the crowd in Barcelona goes silent momentarily to then carry out a “wave” of cheers and flag-waving.Catalonia’s police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, thanked those who took part for demonstrating safely and without incident. Tuesday marked the first National Day of Catalonia since the Catalan regional government launched its own referendum on independence from Spain on October 1, 2017, which was ruled to be illegal by Spain’s supreme court. The vote was marked by violent scenes as Spanish national police and Guardia Civil raided polling stations and arrested Catalan separatist leaders involved in organizing the referendum.
