Locals living near the Carolina coasts readied themselves for Hurricane Florence's landfall on September 11 by filling up sandbags provided by city and county agencies.

This video, filmed in Mrytle Beach, South Carolina, shows locals scooping sand into cloth bags.

The Category 4 storm has prompted 1.5 million residents to evacuate from the Carolinas to Virginia, with many schools and government centers shut to provide shelter. Many reported barren shelves at grocery stores and long lines for gas as the storm drew closer.

According to authorities, Florence is expected to make landfall near Wilmington, North Carolina, on Thursday.
