An alleged member of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) was arrested in Russia’s Smolensk region on Sunday over a Ukrainian plot to murder a Donetsk military leader, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Monday.

Medzhid Gabibulaevich Magomedov, 30, from Russia’s Dagestan Republic, was allegedly hired by the Security Services of Ukraine and the far-right organisation Right Sector to kill one of the military leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic who was living in the Smolensk region.

During the arrest, the FSB seized an improvised explosive device (IED) as well as a firearm with ammunition.

The FSB said that Magomedov admitted that the Ukrainian security services helped Islamic State to plot terror attacks in Russia.
