'The Walking Dead' Star Emily Kinney On Forging Her Pop Music Career

Actress Emily Kinney is forging a music career after her run on “The Walking Dead.” Although the music and television industries are very different, she says singing and acting both come from the same place for her creatively.
“Music is what led me to acting,” she explained. “Like, I started out singing, but acting has allowed me to have a career. But then I also feel like an acting career is very dependent on someone picking you, and so my longevity in this industry and staying sane has been being able to do music and have my own project that I can pick myself for.”
Kinney says the catalyst for releasing an album was her single “Mermaid Song,” which was released last October. The album is based off of a past relationship.
“I feel like some of our relationship was one-sided. You know, when you have a conversation and the person doesn’t text back and you sort of fill in the gaps,” she said.
Emily used her own heartbreak to inspire the album, but she didn’t consult her ex about it beforehand.
“I don’t feel, like, a need to rehash the relationship, like I said very done,” she said. “I’m excited to get these songs out partly because I’m happy to be done and like, make the new songs, in a way.”
