Fight Erupts Over Food Law In Missouri
A new Missouri law says don't call it meat if it doesn't come from livestock or poultry.
CNN reports that the state law that went into effect Tuesday prohibits food companies from marketing products that are not "derived from harvested production livestock or poultry" as meat. violators could receive a fine of up to $1,000 and spend up to a year in jail.
The law would apply to meat substitutes such as soy-based, plant-based meat. These have become increasingly popular in recent years.
